Clay buys friends

Clay buys friends is a performance where handmade ceramic cups are “sold” in exchange for 5 minutes of friendship. It is about setting up unrealistic and uncomfortable situations in order to ask questions about value. In a society full of rules and regulated systems of exchange, how do we put a value on time, friendship, craft, art and experience? In exchange for 5 minutes of friendship, each person was offered a handmade, limited-edition cup to take home with him/her. At the bottom of each cup, there was an inscription that read:
This cup was handmade for you. It took 6 days. We have been friends for 5 minutes.
